Nearly two decades ago, when Capcom was gearing up to launch Mega Man X 5 in North America, a company named GenAzea was given the task of localization. Prior to that, the boss names from the Blue Bomber’s sequel series followed a sort of pattern. In the previous games, bosses were given conventional names such as Quick Man, Bubble Man, Heat Man, Fire Man, or Ice Man. When Mega Man X 5 came to the USA, something egregious happened. The bosses were named after members of an American rock band. As it turns out, the owner of GenAzea asked his wife to name the bosses. The wife, Alyson Court, thought it would be amusing to name them after members of her husband’s favorite band – Guns N’ Roses.
Here is a list of the rechristened names:
Grizzly Slash
Axle The Red
Izzy Glow
Squid Adler
Dark Dizzy
The Skiver
Mattrex
This name-swapping which happened in 2001, wasn’t received well by the fans. Capcom has decided to drop the controversial Guns N’ Roses references for the upcoming Mega Man X Legacy Collection. This new X game, which is to launch next month, will remove the rock band inspired names for the game’s characters, and change them to their original conventional forms.
Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 and 2 come out on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch on July 24.
